EASY No-Drill Tonneau Cover Install for BYD Sharks Ute | Step-by-Step Guide
G’day mates! Just fitted out my BYD Shark Ute with a custom tonneau cover — 100% no-drill, zero mistakes and took under 30 minutes! Using my actual photos, I’ve put together a no-brainer guide. Grab your tools, let’s get stuck in!
Pre-Install Prep (Check Your Parts First!)
Unbox the tonneau cover kit and lay everything out to avoid missing bits:
- Main Kit: Main shell (with roller), left/right rails, rain cover, weatherstripping
- Fixings: Custom no-drill brackets, trapezoid screws, clips, waterproof nuts
- Tools: Socket wrench, Phillips screwdriver, spirit level (MUST have!), sealant (optional but recommended for extra water resistance)
Pro Tip: Sort your screws and brackets into piles — no more hunting around!
🔧 Step 1: Pre-Assemble Rails & Shell (Critical!)
- Peel the protective film off the shell, remove the protective wooden strips on either side, and slot the left/right rails into the shell. Line up the grooves and alignment holes perfectly.
- Pro Move: Don’t tighten the screws yet — leave a bit of play for fine-tuning later to avoid misalignment.
- Insert the roller slats: Slide one end of the slats into the rails, smooth them along the track — no kinks allowed!
Aussie Note: Make sure the metal sliders inside the rails line up with the alignment holes
🛡️ Step 2: Seal It Up (Waterproofing Core!)
- Attach the drain hoses to both ends of the shell — push them all the way in to prevent leaks.
- Run a bead of sealant along the inner edge of the rails, especially where the rails meet the shell. This locks out the rain!
- If your ute has pre-cut rubber strip slots, stick the included weatherstripping in place to fill gaps.
Pro Tip: Use the right-length drain hoses and line up the bottom drainage holes exactly
🚚 Step 3: Mount & Center (Level is Key!)
- Teamwork Alert: Get a mate to help lift the pre-assembled cover into the tub. Center it — make sure the gap between the cover and tub is even left/right and front/back.
- Use the spirit level to check it’s straight — no tilting! Slide it forward to sit against the original car stops.
- Lock it into position once you’re happy with the spot.
Aussie Style: Take care not to scratch the paint! Check the even gaps
Step 4: Fix Brackets (No-Drill Heartbeat!)
- Grab the custom brackets, slot them into the inner tub rails, and line them up with the factory holes EXACTLY — not a single drill bit needed!
- Secure the brackets with the original car screws — 2 per bracket minimum for strength.
- Slide the trapezoid screws into the rail grooves (3 per side) and fasten them loosely.
Aussie Note: Perfect bracket alignment = no wobble
✅ Step 5: Fine-Tune & Finish Up
- Adjust the rails: Keep the front width even; make the rear 1-2mm narrower to avoid the lock catching.
- Tighten all screws: Start with brackets, then lock the rails to the shell. Don’t over-tighten — you’ll strip the threads!
- Fit the rain cover: Slide it into the shell (check the correct orientation!), trim the rubber strips flush, and seal the ends.
- Install the lock: Clip the lock onto the cover and tailgate — make sure it closes smoothly.
Pro Tip: Press the rubber strips down firmly for a tight seal!
⚠️ Aussie-Style Tips & Final Check
- Golden Rules: No drilling, no cutting, no modifying the original car! Tighten screws in stages; never skip sealant/weatherstripping.
-
Test It Out:
- Slide the cover open/closed 5+ times — smooth action, no jitters!
- Close the tailgate — lock holds tight, no wobble.
- Hose it down — check for leaks, drain hoses should work perfectly.
